FED:Protesters demand release of Assange
About 200 people have gathered in Canberra's city centre to demand the release of WikiLeaks'
founder JULIAN ASSANGE.
The speaker of the ACT Legislative Assembly .. Greens' MLA SHANE RATTENBURY .. has
told protesters Mr ASSANGE and WikiLeaks have severely embarrassed governments around
the world .. but this isn't a good reason to undermine fundamental rights.
He says rights like the presumption of innocence and the rule of law must prevail for
all citizens all of the time .. not just when it suits our governments.
Mr RATTENBURY's called on the federal government to guarantee Mr ASSANGE's passport
and that he'll be free from persecution .. if he returns to Australia.
Australian historian HUMPHREY McQUEEN's told the rally .. freedom of speech isn't an
assumption but a right which has been fought for.

FED:Abbott accused of $billion gaffe
Opposition Leader TONY ABBOTT has been accused of a seven billion dollar blunder in
terms of the coalition's election spending commitments .. opening the door for Labor to
attack his ability to manage the economy.
The nation's finances have continued to be the focus of the campaign today .. with
Mr ABBOTT and his treasury spokesman .. JOE HOCKEY .. appearing to be at odds on the issue.
Mr ABBOTT insisted during a morning radio interview that the coalition's spending commitments
would total less than 18 billion dollars.
But during a debate on the economy just hours later at the National Press Club in Canberra
.. Mr HOCKEY said the coalition's promised expenditure totalled more than 25 billion.
The coalition later moved to clarify the difference .. with finance spokesman ANDREW
ROBB saying there was no contradiction .. and that Mr ABBOTT had been asked about savings
measures while Mr HOCKEY was talking about spending commitments.
Labor's seized on the confusion .. with Mr SWAN saying it casts serious doubts over
Mr ABBOTT'S economic credentials.

NSW: No change in stance on NSW Lotteries: OFarrell

NSW: No change in stance on NSW Lotteries: OFarrell
SYDNEY, Aug 18 AAP - NSW Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell is adamant his position
on the privatisation of NSW Lotteries has not changed, despite reports the shadow cabinet
wants to support the sell-off.
Mr O'Farrell said although the sale of NSW Lotteries remained Liberal Party policy,
he still wants to ensure the state government's proposal properly protects newsagents.
"We support the sale of state lotteries provided that newsagents are looked after.
We made that point in 2007, we made that point after the budget, we make that point today,"
Mr O'Farrell told reporters.
Treasurer Eric Roozendaal last week announced six protective measures for newsagents
as part of the plans to sell NSW Lotteries.
They include a three-year freeze on NSW Lotteries products being sold by any new agent
and a guarantee over the same period that stores will not have to change signage or terminals.
The move was as much to appease the opposition as newsagents, with the coalition saying
it opposed the sale originally because proper protections were not in place.
But with the concessions made, Fairfax reported on Wednesday that senior coalition
MPs would push the shadow cabinet to support the sale.
"There's been no change despite what others are saying," Mr O'Farrell said.
Mr O'Farrell said he would hold discussions with newsagent groups and look at the legislation
before a definite decision was made.
With no majority in the upper house and minor parties opposing the plans, the state
government needs the support of the coalition for the sell-off legislation to pass NSW
Parliament.

QLD: Teachers prepare to fight for better pay

QLD: Teachers prepare to fight for better pay
BRISBANE, April 8 AAP - Queensland teachers are gearing up to fight for a better pay
deal as they negotiate a new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA).
Queensland Teachers' Union president Steve Ryan said industrial action was "a real
possibility" if negotiations with the state government stall.
Mr Ryan said Queensland teachers' pay was among the lowest in Australia, with senior
teachers earning $7,000 less than their NSW counterparts.
"As the current teaching workforce ages and retires, new teachers will not be attracted
to the ranks because the Queensland pay is simply too low in comparison to other states,"
he said on Wednesday.
"As a result, there will soon be a chronic shortage of classroom teachers and such
an outcome would have dire consequences for the social, economic and education future
of this allegedly smart state."
Nearly 4,000 teachers across the state have voted to support the QTU's campaign to lift pay.
The current teacher EBA expires on April 30.

NSW: Vanessa's law delay puts children at risk - Vanessa's dad
The father of a girl who died in Royal North Shore Hospital says delaying a vote on
the "Vanessa's Law" health bill is putting children at risk.
Shadow Health Minister JILLIAN SKINNER last week introduced a bill into parliament
.. which would require a paediatrician to oversee the treatment of children admitted to
adult wards.
It follows VANESSA ANDERSON'S death at Royal North Shore in November 2005 after she
was hit in the head with a golf ball.
Labor MPs moved yesterday to stop any vote on the legislation until parliament resumes next year.
VANESSA'S father .. WARREN ANDERSON .. says the bill should be passed before the summer
school holidays .. as there will be a lot of children admitted to adult wards over Christmas.

Fed: Meat back on the menu
SYDNEY, Aug 20 AAP - Australian families are turning back to "meat and three veg" as
staple fare, according to a new study published in the Nutrition and Dietetics journal.
The study, funded by Meat and Livestock Australia, reveals 88 per cent of Australian
households eat red meat at least once a week, while 96 per cent put meat on the table
every month.
Meat and Livestock Australia managing director David Thompson says the figure represents
a small but significant change in eating habits, and there are a number of reasons behind
it.
"People are becoming more aware of the health benefits of fresh food," Mr Thompson said.
"They're becoming disenchanted with processed food. They're responding by going back
to more traditional food.
The study found that red meat plays a vital role in child development.
"The nutrients in red meat are so important for childhood development, particularly
early childhood," Mr Thompson said.
"Red meat is the major deliverer of iron, zinc and vitamin B12 in our diets, and a
little known fact is that it's also second only to seafood in omega-3."
Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott lent his support to the study.
"I have always enjoyed red meat," Mr Abbott said.
"It's important to rehabilitate red meat as part of the Australian diet.
"Apart from anything else, red meat is an important Australian industry."
Australians consume 35 per cent of domestic production of red meat.
Japan and the United States are our biggest meat export destinations.

The Fixer: Sears keeps shirt rebate on its back
Dear Fixer: Sears had a rebate program that went from June 11 to June 20. You were required to purchase $50 or more of any combination of men's apparel and submit your application by July 20; then you would receive a $50 "Come Back Cash" coupon.
I made a purchase of men's shirts on June 14. The amount was $55.96 before tax.
I mailed my rebate form on June 27. On July 14, I called to verify that they received it. They said they did and I would get my coupon in four weeks.
It never came. I contacted them on Sept. 20 and again was told the rebate would be coming. On Nov. 12, I still had not received it. I talked to a woman who said I would have it in 30 days.
On Jan. 6, after still not hearing from them, I called and was transferred several times until I finally talked to a rep who told me they ran out of funding for the promotion and would only send me a $25 gift card.
How can a big company get away with something like this?
Patricia Renn
Dear Patricia: Well, that would have been quite a deal if it had actually worked.
This is why The Fixer is not a big fan of rebates. There's just too much opportunity for the whole thing to go south. And you weren't the only one who had a snafu with this particular rebate, as complaints on various blogs attest.
The good thing was you were really organized. As soon as we laid out your problem to the folks at Sears HQ, it got fixed immediately. They're sending out a $50 gift card to replace the coupon you would have gotten, and you can keep the $25 gift card they had mailed earlier.
Sears also promised to thoroughly review your case to figure out what when wrong.
Dear Fixer: For the past year and half, my home phone number has been listed as the number for the new Costco in my town. As of this writing, it is still under construction.
I tried to get this corrected. I sent an e-mail to Costco and I talked to the director of networking. He spoke to someone and for a time the calls stopped, but now they are continuing.
I do not want to change my phone number. I want the yellow pages to take it out of their searches online and I want to get it out of Google's (800) GOOG-411. I hope you can help me.
Teresa Arrieta
Dear Teresa: Just what you needed -- a huge new Costco opening in your town and everyone who wants to shop there or get a job there is calling your house. You told The Fixer this started about a year and a half ago, with the phone ringing from 6 a.m. to midnight.
The really weird thing is your number isn't similar at all to the actual Costco number.
The main culprits seemed to be Google 411 and a couple of online directory assistance sites.
The Fixer guessed Costco would want to help fix this -- after all, it was their potential customers calling the wrong place. (The store opened for business Nov. 18, while we were working on your problem.) We eventually ended up with Derek Snead, the discount giant's corporate counsel. Snead got in touch with the offending websites and they made the corrections. As for Google 411, that service was scrapped by Google on Nov. 12, so that fixed itself. Yay!
We waited a couple months as the calls gradually died down. When we last spoke with you, you said the calls have dropped significantly. We recently found one more website that still had it wrong; Costco has submitted a correction to that site, too.
As the Internet churns on and new Web pages replace old ones, this should get better.
Power scam?
If you gave or received an expensive Power Balance bracelet for the holidays, hoping it would boost your athletic strength and balance, we're sorry to rain on your workout. But we thought you should know that the purveyor has run into trouble for exaggerating its claims.
In Australia, Power Balance has admitted to engaging in "misleading conduct" in advertising the bracelets and has offered an apology and full refund to its Aussie customers. Authorities in Italy and Spain have fined the company. And a class-action suit recently was filed in Los Angeles.
Power Balance still claims that its $29.95 bracelets, worn by athletic superstars like Shaquille O'Neal and Drew Brees, optimize the body's natural energy flow through imbedded holograms.
The closest thing The Fixer has is a rubber Livestrong band the Junior Fixers got for free from a friend. We're thinking that unless this Power Balance bracelet does the squats and lifts for you, 30 bucks is a lot to pay.

Lenders have deadline to look over a new deal.
NAHKEEL has outlined the terms of its plans to pay back its debtors at a meeting in Dubai and asked them to respond by the end of August.
The Dubai property developer which is in ongoing talks with 20 financial institutions to restructure $10.5 billion worth of debt confirmed yesterday that it had held a meeting with the coordi-nating committee of its creditor banks and it said that "the terms of the restructuring are unanimously suppor-ted in principle by the committee, subject to further internal approvals".
Nakheel has already started to make payments to its trade creditors after the government announced a plan for the debt restructuring of its parent company Dubai World in May. It had previously been reported that Nakheel was planning to offer lenders interest of four percentage points more than benchmark rates, but a source familiar with the matter was quoted by Reuters yesterday as saying: "Each facility has its own deal... They are individually negotiating terms of each facility with the coordinating committee.
You can't put one number on it but they will likely have similar terms."
